At Imago Reliquiae, we are dedicated to the protection and conservation of heritage. We are proud to present one of our most exciting projects to date: the 3D virtual reconstruction of the former municipal slaughterhouse of Caravaca de la Cruz. This neomudéjar-style building, an architectural gem of the 20th century, was designed by the talented architect Manuel Muñoz Casadejús and is a symbol of the history and cultural legacy of the Region of Murcia.

In this project, we applied the latest 3D modeling and virtual reality technologies to faithfully recreate this iconic building. Through this innovative approach to digital musealization, we have brought history to life. This project is a clear example of how technology can serve the protection and study of our heritage, allowing future generations to explore and appreciate the richness of our past.

The virtual reconstruction process was carried out using historical references obtained from the Facebook group ‘Fotografías Antiguas de Caravaca‘. These valuable images and testimonies allowed us to better understand the architecture and function of the building, ensuring an accurate and detailed representation of the Caravaca slaughterhouse in 3D.

This project not only stands out for its historical and cultural value, but also as an excellent example of the conservation and revaluation initiatives for heritage that we are promoting in the Region of Murcia, especially in the towns of Caravaca and Cehegín. We believe that these types of proposals are essential to protect and preserve our heritage, making it accessible to everyone, no matter where they are.

Urban Integration in 2023

In 2023, the old Caravaca slaughterhouse once again becomes part of the urban landscape, but this time virtually. Thanks to our 3D reconstruction, this historic building is reintegrated into the urban fabric, highlighting the rich history and heritage of the Region of Murcia.

Making Of: Behind the Renders

Get inside the fascinating process of the 3D virtual reconstruction of the Caravaca Slaughterhouse. In “Behind the Renders”, we invite you to discover the meticulous process that allows us to digitally revive this iconic building from plans and photographs, using camera matching.

The first step in our digital journey is 3D modeling, where we create a three-dimensional representation of the slaughterhouse in hard surface to which anthropic imperfections are applied through digital sculpture. Retopology seeks to optimize the mesh and topological reduction enables a balance between polygonal precision and rendering efficiency, ensuring a detailed and manageable 3D model. The creation of different levels of detail: ‘Level of Details’ (LOD), to which normal maps from high-definition models will be applied later, is a procedure aimed at adapting the complexity of the model according to the proximity or distance of the observer, thus optimizing performance without sacrificing visual quality.

Light is a crucial element that adds realism and depth to the model, highlighting its architectural details and creating atmospheres that evoke the past. Often it is preferable to light the scene before texturing it to obtain preliminary results on which to work on compositions and frames. Texturing is the next step in our process. Here, we apply detailed images to the surface of our 3D model to emulate the original materials of the slaughterhouse: from stone to wood, giving incredible realism and authenticity to the reconstruction. Finally, we arrive at rendering and post-processing, where all these elements are combined to create a final image that is both a work of art and a valuable tool for the conservation of heritage.
